Abstract

This study aims to present the preliminary results of the study on the dynamics of the behavior of the Brazilian GDP in the period from 1996 to 2018 and how the components of aggregate demand influenced such dynamics. To this end, a survey was conducted of the quarterly growth rates of the GDP and of each of these components, namely: household consumption expenditure, government consumption expenditure, gross fixed capital formation, exports of goods and services and imports of goods and services. In this first study, Pearson's correlation analysis was applied and the results obtained allowed us to verify the importance of the variation in corporate investment (gross fixed capital formation) in the behavior of the GDP, as well as the important role of imports for this component and the low correlation of exports with economic growth. These preliminary results already indicate important directions for the economic policy of the country.
