Abstract

This study explores the importance of the meat alternative industry in terms of environmental sustainability. A comparison was made with the environmental impacts of the meat industry, especially the livestock production. Primary data has been collected from NASA and Our World in Data which show the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the global meat production. As a second step, data has also been collected from scientific research papers which explore the awareness of climate impacts caused by meat consumption Therefore, it could be used for comparing it with plant-based meat alternatives to outline its potential for limiting the global greenhouse gas emissions. The final results indicated that the meat alternative industry has a high potential in replacing conventional meat to face the climate crisis. Nevertheless, in terms of cultural and diet reasons, it is difficult to say that meat alternatives will find a wide acceptance to displace the still growing meat industry in the future.
